IMPERIAL SOCIETY OF TEACHERS OF DANCING (ISTD)
ROYAL ACADEMY OF DANCE (RAD)

The examination structure for the ISTD and RAD are designed to cater for both those who wish to progress to making dance their profession or those pursuing dance purely as an activity forenjoyment.

The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and Royal Academy of Dance are leading dance examination boards worldwide. They offer examinations for all ages and abilities which follow a progressive structure for learning and achievement in dance. The exercises and amalgamations throughout the grades are created by lead examiners and industry professionals, focusing on building technique, strength and performance abilities whilst prioritising safe practice and age appropriate study for growing bodies. Examinations are regulated on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). They are recognised by schools for GCSE PE and Duke of Edinburgh award. UCAS points are awarded from Grade 6 to aid Colleges and Universities applications and scholarships.

Levels of the QCF and the position for each ISTD/RAD regulated qualification.
Grades 1, 2 and 3 – Level 1 – equivalent to GCSE Grades D – G
Grades 4 and 5 – Level 2 – equivalent to GCSE Grades A* to C
Grade 6 and Intermediate – Level 3 – equivalent to AS and A Level
Advanced 1 – Level 4 equivalent of 1st year of degree

Every student is given the opportunity to take examinations once the required standard isachieved. Exams are not compulsory but are wonderful for confidence building, as a measureof progress and a celebration of hard work and achievement. All students who takeexaminations are awarded with certificates, report sheets and/or medals.

Exam fee’s are separate from class fees, signed consent and payment is necessary before students can be entered. Extra coaching sessions prior to an exam are essential in exam preparation.

Amber is a fully registered teaching member of the ISTD/RAD and regularly attends CPD to keep updated on new syllabi, exam requirements and teaching techniques, ensuring appropriate content is delivered according to each child’s age and stage of development. All children receive high quality teaching to reach their full potential through having a positive dance experience.
